HTC gives additional week for schools to recycle directories and cell phones.

Horry and Georgetown Counties, SC- Monday, April 29, 2013 – HTC announced today that the deadline has been extended to Friday, May 10 for the annual directory and cell phone recycling program. HTC is partnering with the Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Wendy’s, MyrtleBeachFamilyGolf.com, Medieval Times and Auntie Anne’s for the 2013 directory and cell phone recycling program that began on March 20. RECYCLING 2013 is the theme of this year’s program to benefit local schools, the community, and the environment. HTC encourages everyone to drop off their old telephone directories (HTC & any other directories accepted) or any used cell phones to an HTC office location in Carolina Forest, Conway, Socastee, Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach, Little River, or Loris. The goal is for each partnering school in Horry and Georgetown Counties to collect at least 2,013 directories.

For each directory that is delivered to any HTC branch office location, technology prizes will be awarded based on two criteria: 1) the schools that recycle the most directories, and 2) the schools that recycle the most directories based on the number of students in the school. First place ($2,500), second place ($1,000) and third place ($500) prizes will be awarded in each category. Technology prizes will include desktop computers, laptops, smart boards, iPads and more.

For each cell phone recycled, HTC will donate a minimum of $1.00 per phone all the way up to $39 per phone to the Horry County Schools Fund for Homeless Students. Plus, each person donating a directory or cell phone will receive a rack card with coupons good for a FREE small FROSTY from Wendy’s, a FREE pretzel with the purchase of a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s, a FREE kid’s admission to Medieval Times, and a 50% off coupon for MyrtleBeachFamilyGolf.com. In addition, the top three schools that recycle the most phone books will receive prizes for the top participating class including: 1) Wendy’s FREE Kid’s Meal coupons for the students and teachers in the top class of those schools, 2) prizes from Medieval Times!

“HTC has sponsored the directory recycling program for over 21 years and 2013 is no exception. Our goal for this campaign is to continue this joint effort that supports area schools and the environment-both of which are crucial to our children’s future. During the course of a year, a large number of schools in our service area request support for new technology in the classroom. This recycling partnership presents an excellent opportunity for schools to win technology prizes for classroom use. In addition, this program creates environmental awareness by involving students, parents, and communities- everyone benefits,” said Nicole Hyman, HTC Senior Marketing Coordinator.

“Wendy’s is proud to partner with HTC in the directory and cell phone recycling program for 2013. To teach and encourage recycling with our area youth will help promote a greener future,” said Kathy Alvis, Director of Marketing for Wendy’s.

“Auntie Anne’s is extremely proud to partner with HTC in the recycling program again in 2013. It’s rewarding to have a program that teaches families of our community the importance of recycling and are recognized for their efforts. We appreciate your help in making a difference in our schools,” said Andy King owner/operator of Auntie Anne’s Coastal Grand Mall, Broadway at the Beach, Myrtle Beach Mall and Tanger Outlets.

“Not only is this recycling program a valuable learning experience for the children but also an extraordinary effort for our community in reducing the negative impact of waste, conserving our natural resources and energy and decreasing air and water pollution,” said Sherry Johnson, Entertainment Golf General Manager. “Burroughs & Chapin is thrilled to work with HTC, Wendy’s, Auntie Anne’s, Medieval Times, the Solid Waste Authority and the schools of Horry and Georgetown counties to support this agenda and the importance of recycling awareness and education.”

“Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament is excited become a partner in the 2013 HTC recycling program. As a company, we feel it’s an honorable cause to support recycling and especially a program like this that gives back to those who recycle! We take the initiative to recycle at our castle, in a variety of ways; and are excited to be a part of an initiative with other business partners to reach out into the community and impress upon our area youth the importance of recycling, keeping the environment clean and going green! GO GREEN! And GO GREEN KNIGHT,” said Jennifer Willard, Marketing & Sales Manager for Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.

When telephone books are recycled, they are used for such things as the manufacturing of ceiling tiles, textbooks, insulation, and envelopes for telephone bills. When cell phones are recycled, they are refurbished and redeployed in areas of the world where there are no land (wire) lines, or, where the cost of a new phone is prohibitive. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

“It is always a pleasure to work with HTC on their phonebook recycling campaign because it meets the Solid Waste Authority’s mission of “Protecting Tomorrow’s Environment Today,” said Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling & Corporate Affairs for Horry County Solid Waste Authority. “This program has been very successful in the past, and we look forward to another year of growth and success. It is the SWA’s goal to participate in programs that promote and encourage recycling while at the same time save landfill space.”

Old directories and cell phones may be dropped off at any HTC branch office location. The Horry County Solid Waste Authority has provided a large recycling bin at the HTC Business office on Highway 701 North in Conway to handle deliveries of 25 or more. HTC branch office locations will not be able to handle drops in excess of 25 directories. Please see the receptionist for rack cards with coupon offers from Wendy’s, Auntie Anne’s, Medieval Times and MyrtleBeachFamilyGolf.com and to give credit to the preferred school.

In 2012, 70 public and private schools in Horry and Georgetown Counties participated with over 40,241 directories recycled instead of going into the landfill. Participating schools and local citizens also recycled 390 old cell phones with a value of $600. HTC presented that donation to the Horry County Schools fund for Homeless Students. Over the last 14 years, HTC has contributed more than $127,061.00 needed by participating and winning schools to purchase new technology in the classroom.

Since 1998, 732 tons of directories have been recycled and more than 21,000 cell phones have been recycled in the last nine years instead of going into landfills. As a result of the recycling programs, HTC has contributed more than $127,000 to public and private schools in Horry and Georgetown Counties over the past 14 years.

HTC sponsors Monday home games at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to benefit the “Backpack Buddies” program.

HTC is connecting with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans this season as the presenting sponsor of the “Make a Splash Mondays” and aiding the “Backpack Buddies” program in Horry County. The company is encouraging the community to bring non-perishable food items to the 11 Monday home games to help stock the “Backpack Buddies” food bank for the 2013-14 school year.

The first “Make a Splash Monday” is scheduled for April 15. Those that donate a non-perishable food item will receive half-price admissions as well as complimentary autographed baseball cards from Pelicans players. The cards will feature the players doing work in the community. Items such as Ramen noodles, pop tarts, individual servings of pudding, individual servings of apple sauce, fruit cups, beanie weenies, Vienna sausage, cereal, raviolis (pop top cans), chicken noodle soup (pop top cans) will be accepted as donations.

“HTC connects with the Pelicans each year, and we are looking forward to another successful season for the players and the fans,” said Tom Vitt, director of marketing at HTC. “HTC is proud to support the team and the community through a worthy cause such as the Backpack Buddies program.
